Gunmen Attack INEC Headquarters In Owerri

Staccato gunshots rent the air on Monday morning in Owerri, when gunmen attacked the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, located at Owerri-Port Harcourt road.

A fire bomb was thrown on the building by the attackers which damaged part of it

Mike Abbatam, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, who confirmed the incident, said three of the gunmen were killed and some firebombs recovered.

Eight days ago, the office of the electoral umpire was also torched by arsonists in Orlu Local Government Area of the State

The attack on INEC Headquarters in Owerri, occured at about 3am.

Reports say three of the attackers were killed, including their commander by a joint security team which was able to repel them.

Abbatam said only three Ak47 rifles and vehicles were recovered.

Our correspondent gathered that security has been beefed up in parts of Owerri after the incident.
