Tension is now high at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, over the recent publication of list of staff selected to participate in this week’ s election as INEC ad hoc staff.
The list which was supposed to be a secret until a formal letter is sent to the successful staff was blown open by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Iwe who went and pasted it at the staff platform, thus throwing up dust among staff.
The Vice Chancellor is being blamed for the current chaos in the university following his indiscretion in handling of such sensitive matter.
For instance,those who the 18 page document which contains 499 names did not favour, are at daggers drawn with their heads of department and deans of colleges. They are querying why their names were excluded.
Again, the university which incurred the wrath of INEC in 2019 over the shameful conduct of some of those who went to imo state for Election duties,was expected to submit list of people with integrity. But alas , the list is suffused with names of those who previously abused their offices. Most of the names are the cronies of Prof Iwe , the VC.
Although the list was formally approved by INEC chairman, Prof Mamud Yakubu on February 15th, there are growing fears that some of the names may be dropped.
Indeed it was learnt that because of the manner the list was released,some of the staff may have been approached and compromised by politician.
” I know the man ( VC) is new but he has even exposed the staff to danger by the way he released the list . He should have asked questions”, a source opined.
However,in order to douse tension, the INEC leadership may remove MOUAU staff from the exercise or approve that almost all qualified staff should proceed for training after which those who scaled through some established criteria will be finally selected.
