Maranatha University, a privately owned tertiary institution in Lagos, last Wednesday, held its first matriculation ceremony at the institution’s facility at the Okota-Lagos Campus.
The Christian faith-based University was established in 2021 to produce morally upright graduates who will be globally competitive and have the right leadership attitude to change the society.
Delivering his matriculation address, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Rufus Akinyele, observed that Western education, especially Information, Communication and Technology, is changing the world.
He was quick to point out that western education has also left the society morally bankrupt.
He postulated that what is amiss is the reason for the for faith-based institutions, saying that the University will promote the study of French and Chinese Languages to prepare the students for the challenge of globalization and foreign mission.
He told the matriculants that they are bound to face some challenges as pioneers of Maranatha University; but that they should also consider these as opportunities.
Emphasising the need for the students to work hard, he recall the view of an American author, Orison Swett Marden, who said “The golden opportunity you are seeking is in yourself, it is not in your environment, it is not in your luck or chance or the help of others, it is in yourself alone”.
In the same being, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, Rev. Chukwuemeka Ngubo, disclosed the vision that birthed the University; namely the training of future leaders intellectually, physical and spiritually which is expressed by the Total Man Concept (TMC).
He reiterated the the commitment of the management to make the University an outstanding hub in Science and Technology and the commitment to imparting Christian values.
While charging the matriculating students to be hardworking, he disclosed the institution’s preparedness to offer scholarships to the deserving students and other reward system to encourage excellence in research.
He also disclosed the effort of the University to reinforcing its strength in various fields of study by employing more professors who are known for their track records in the fields.
In solidarity, the Anchor University Deputy Vice – Chancellor, Professor Johnson Fatokun, who was one of the Special Guests, admonished the students to be of good conduct and character as ambassadors of Maranatha University, and of Christ.
