*Onu, Izunaso, Ebere, Others Eulogize Late Foremost Journalist*
Eminent Nigerians from various walks of life, on Saturday witnessed the funeral in Owerri, of a foremost respected journalist and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Sunny Onyeukwu.
Onyeukwu was Special Adviser to immediate past Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
He was also an Illustrious son of Owerri, the eldest son of Late IKEMBA OWERRE, an elder statesman, Chief Nath Onyeukwu of Umuihugba Umuodu in Owerri Municipal, Imo State.
In their tributes, Sunny’s boss, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said “he was a great man who made important and invaluable contributions to development and progress of our nation”
Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo State, Sir Ebere Mac Donald (Phd), stated that “Sunny was a man of impeccable character and achieved a lot in the service of God and humanity”
Senator Representing Imo West Senatorial Zone, Senator Osita Izunaso, stated that “he will be remembered for his commitment to the service of mankind”
Among dignatries at the funeral include: former member, House of Representatives, Hon Ernest Ibejiako, member representing Owerri Municipal in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Ugochukwu Obodo, Special Adviser (Security) to the Governor, CP Dan Okoro (retd), former Majority Leader, Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Lugard Osuji, former Imo State Commissioner of Finance, Hon Obinna Mbata, Hon Jude Agbugba, former Owerri TC Chairpersons, Owerri Municipal, Hon (Mrs) Gladys Amuneke, Hon Ebere Chukwuemeka, some traditional Rulers in Owerri Nchi Ise, former Mayor of Owerri, Hon CDB Williams, the Chief Priest of Owerri, Mr.Reginald Ejiogu, the the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Owerri Municipal led by Hon Onyekachi Ibezim and many other dignatries.
Senior Journalists in the State, including Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr. Ifeanyi Nwanguma, Secretary, NUJ South East, Mr.Eze Adiuku, Special Assistant (Media) to immediate past Minister of State (Education), Goodluck Opiah, Mr.Kelechi Mejuobi, businessmen and several Owerri community leaders were also in attendance.
Several groups such as Nde Mdom Owerre, Nde Mgboto Owerre, were also present at the funeral.
At the funeral service conducted at the Onyeukwu family compound and officiated by Bishop Stafford Nwaogu of Praise Centre Church International, P.C.C.I, Owerri, he prayed God to grant him eternal peace in His bosom. He charged people to live righteously to have a peaceful and secured life, as well as spend their eternity in God’s paradise.
He charged the Onyeukwu family to be consoled that God is the giver and taker of life.
Speaking during a brief stop over at Umuihugba Umuodu community hall, the President General of Umuihugba Umuodu Community Development Union, UWDU, Sir Sorronandi Unegbu, described Late Sunny as an asset to the community.
He recalled some of the projects the deceased attracted to the community.
“Sunny lived a life of integrity.
“He was a good man, credible and diligent.
“He contributed immensely to the development of our community. We will forever miss him” he said.
Speaking to newsmen on the demise of the politician cum journalist, his younger brother and an online media publisher, Mr. Innocent Onyeukwu, described his late brother as a rare titan.
“He was a rare gift to humanity. A shining star. An orator, with deep knowledge of contemporary issues.
“My late brother was an encyclopedia of knowledge and his simple lifestyle is worthy of emulation.
“He was an asset to the nation, the State, and to his people. We will miss him greatly” he said.
