History, will remember the Imo state Council of Elders for their courage and wisdom in initiating the Imo state charter of equity. The experiences of the elders acting on representative capacities, speak volumes of their noble dream of a peaceful, united and progressive state.
No doubt, the issue of which zone takes the governorship position in the state is a constant source of frictions among the three component zones in the state. Orlu zone with her more collection of numbers of local government areas has continued to dominate the governorship position. I must say the zone did not merely set out to dominate other zones but has only benefited from the electoral mistakes made by the two other zones especially Owerri zone.
It is on record that if any zone should be accused of working against the charter of equity in the first time, it is Owerri zone though unconsciously. This will certainly, not be a popular comment among us, the Owerri zone people because we seem to favour unnecessary threnodies of being dominated by Orlu when in truth we were the people that always made it easy for them. In 2007, Owerri zone did drive strongly, the collective bargaining to protect the first victory of Agbaso. This more than anything else, made it easy for Ohakim to emerge as the governor. The records are verifiable. Again, it was the same Owerri zone that made it easier for Rochas from Orlu zone to take over from Ohakim. The arrest of Ohakim’s second term directly arrested the previous charter of equity in the state. Let us avoid this pitfall this time.
I am not by any means standing as an advocate for any zone but for all the zones especially my own zone Owerri to rise and do the needful by rallying round Governor Hope Uzodimma’s reelection which is the surest pathway to a new political stability in the state. In saying this, am not being beggarly in asking for support for the governor. I am rather saying that the governor has dutifully and patriotically, performed exceedingly well to earn him a second term. Also, he has given his commitments as he has adopted the charter of equity, to give it the most needed practical expressions by implementing it after his second tenure.
Owerri zone has an ample opportunity to rescue herself. Their votes for the charter of equity must be reflective in their massive votes for Governor Hope Uzodimma/APC on November 11th, 2023. This is the deposit which the zone will present and draw from in her quest for the governorship position come 2027.
Let us be reminded of the mistakes of the past and work towards correcting them in the present.
