The Imo State governorship election will be held on November 11. The race will feature notable contenders from different political parties, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Governor Hope Uzodimma (APC)
Governor Hope Uzodimma assumed office in January 2020 after a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the election of Emeka Ihedioha of the PDP.
His tenure has been marked by some infrastructure projects, especially in urban areas, including the reconstruction of key roads like Owerri-Orlu Road, Owerri-Okigwe Road, and Owerri-Mbaise-Umuahia Road.
These projects have been touted as major achievements of his administration, aimed at improving the state’s road network and stimulating economic activities.
However, the Uzodimma administration has not been without its share of controversies.
One of the most pressing challenges that Governor Uzodimma faces ahead of the election on Saturday, is the security situation in Imo State.
During his first tenure, the state has witnessed incidents of violence and insecurity, including clashes with non-state actors, unknown gunmen, and pro-independence agitators.
Analysts contend that if he is to secure a second term, he must convince voters that his administration can effectively address these security challenges.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP)
Samuel Anyanwu, running on the platform of the PDP, had served as a senator and held the position of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
This experience positions him as a candidate with a deep understanding of legislative matters and governance.
Anyanwu has adopted an effective campaign strategy, engaging with various communities and promising to make Imo State safe again.
He, however, faces enormous challenges ahead of the polls on Saturday.
The PDP, a party with a strong presence in Imo State, has experienced internal party struggles. Navigating these dynamics and unifying the party members and stakeholders behind his candidacy has been Anyanwu’s burden ahead of the polls.
Senator Athan Achonu
Senator Athan Achonu is running on the Labour Party (LP) platform.
He, too, brings legislative experience to the table, having served as a senator in the past.
This background equips him with a deep understanding of policy and governance; and could be a valuable asset in governing Imo State.
A notable aspect of Achonu’s campaign is trying to leverage the popularity of the LP presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi. It is not clear if he has succeeded in recreating Obi’s level of acceptance in the state.
He has connected with local voters on a minimal scale, having embarked on effective grassroots campaigns in the hinterland, but observers contend that he faces challenges in terms of name recognition and popularity.
Aside consistently echoing his commitment to compel Imolites to come home and invest, encapsulated in his Aku Ru Ulo initiative, he has not given a clear roadmap for rejiging the state.
