Amidst a string of disappointing results, Nigerians are increasingly vocal in demanding the removal of Super Eagles’ head coach, Jose Peseiro, ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The demand for change comes in the aftermath of Nigeria’s recent 1-1 draw against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, raising concerns about the team’s performance.
While Peseiro’s previous contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) concluded in June, he recently signed a new six-month contract extending to the end of the 2023 AFCON. Despite securing a spot in the AFCON finals, doubts linger over the Super Eagles’ chances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Critics argue that Peseiro’s coaching record, marked by eight losses and six wins, raises questions about his efficacy. However, opinions diverge on the root cause of the team’s struggles. Some, like coach Emmanuel Brown, insist that the issues lie with the NFF’s failure to address concerns such as unpaid bonuses and allowances, affecting players’ commitment to the national team.
In a contrasting view, Hon. Nse Essien, a member of the NFF Board, deflected responsibility, stating that the Sports Ministry, not the NFF, is responsible for Peseiro’s employment.
According to him, Financial constraints further complicate the situation, as unpaid salaries hinder the potential termination of Peseiro’s contract.
Amidst the clamour for change, concerns extend beyond Peseiro’s coaching abilities. Calls for the NFF to prioritize the welfare of players, address financial challenges, and explore a coaching change intensify.
