The National Association Of Persons With Physical Disability (NAPWPD), in Imo State, marked International Wheelchair Day on Friday, March 2, 2024, with a fervent call for the enactment of legislation to protect the rights of wheelchair users and individuals with disabilities in the State.
Addressing members of the Association at the commemorative event held at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, Hon Jude Okparaeke, Coordinator of NAPWD in Imo State, expressed gratitude to caregivers, organizations, and communities that support wheelchair users.
He emphasized the crucial role of wheelchairs in enhancing mobility and inclusivity for people with disabilities worldwide, underscoring the significance of International Wheelchair Day, observed annually on March 1st.
Okparaeke highlighted the profound impact of wheelchairs on individuals’ daily functioning, lamenting that many who need wheelchairs lack access to them.
He said “Founded in 2008, International Wheelchair Day serves to raise awareness about the importance of wheelchair accessibility and inclusivity, advocating for support and recognition for those facing mobility challenges”
Former NAPWD Vice President, Ambassador Iyke Ibe, KSM, urged the swift passage of legislation establishing a Commission for Persons With Disabilities in the State, currently undergoing deliberation in the State House of Assembly with a second reading scheduled for March 6, 2024.
He stressed the need for collaboration and encouraged individuals not to view disability as a disadvantage.
In emphasizing cooperation, Ibe called on NAPWD to seek support from various stakeholders, including the Governor’s wife, Barr (Mrs) Chioma Uzodimma.
In his remarks, George Egeonu Nzewuihe urged support from both local and international non-governmental organizations to bolster NAPWD’s advocacy efforts.
