Finidi George has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Super Eagles, just days after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced plans to bring in a foreign technical adviser.
According to sources, Finidi took the decision on Saturday, citing the NFF’s decision to bring in a foreign technical adviser as the reason for his resignation.
Finidi’s resignation was confirmed by former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account. “News just in: Finidi George @FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his @NGSuperEagles manager position,” Ibitoye wrote.
Finidi George was appointed on April 29, 2024, after Jose Peseiro’s contract expired in February. During his brief tenure, the Super Eagles had a 1-1 draw with South Africa and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic, putting Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification in jeopardy.
The NFF is yet to react to Finidi’s resignation, but the Federation had earlier apologized to Nigerians for the dismal output of the Super Eagles in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers. The NFF Executive Committee also resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
Finidi George played for the Nigerian national team, winning 62 caps for the country. He was a member of the Nigerian golden generation that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The Super Eagles are currently without a permanent manager ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in March 2025. The NFF president, Ibrahim Gusau, has assured Nigerians that the Federation will take all necessary steps to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
