The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, has urged the people of Umuihugba/Umuodu community in Owerri Municipal to protect the Solar Powered Streetlights project installed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Speaking at the Site handover ceremony, Ekomaru emphasized the importance of keeping the project safe and neat to ensure its longevity and benefit to the community.
She noted that the project, when completed, would encourage development in the area, and charged the people to keep the project safe and neat to enable it last long for their own benefit.
The project, attracted by APC candidate for Owerri Federal Constituency, Hon. CDB Williams, aims to install 229 solar-powered streetlights in the community, generating 100 mega watts of light.
The contracting firm handling the project is Cascade Engineering Systems Limited based in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
The NDDC Representative in Imo State, Hon. Kyrian Uchegbu, emphasized the need for the community to support the contractor and keep the streets clean to ensure the project’s success.
He noted that each pole is 8 meters in height and 25 meters apart from each other, and urged the people to shun “marching ground money” and support the contractor to complete the project.
The community leaders and residents thanked the NDDC and Hon. Williams for the project, promising to protect and maintain it.
Hon. Williams appreciated NDDC and the State Government for the project, which he described as worthwhile, and noted that the Solar Powered Streetlights would be installed in various streets and public centers in the community, including Amaram Street and Extension, Madumere, Ihugba, Zander Streets, Christ Church Road, parts of Uzii layout, Mbaise, Tetlow Roads, village squares, schools, and health centers.
The event was attended by notable leaders in the area, including CP Okoro Dan, Nze Alex Ohanwe, Sir Leo Ozurumba, Sir Hendricks Emereole, and Chief Angela Akunna, who eulogized Hon. Williams for attracting the project.
The Solar Powered Streetlights project is part of the NDDC’s “Light Up Communities In The Niger Delta Areas Program” aimed at improving the lives of people in the Niger Delta Region.
The project is expected to encourage socialization, development, and security in the area.
