The South East Coalition for Good Governance (SECG) has urged underperforming and ailing public office holders in Nigeria to follow the example of United States President Joe Biden.
President Biden on Sunday withdrew from the U.S. presidential race, endorsing his Vice, Kamala Harris, as the Democratic nominee.
SECG, in a statement in Enugu signed by its Coordinator, High Chief Evans Ukwuegbu and made available to INNONEWS, praised President Biden for his patriotism and willingness to listen to wise counsel.
“President Biden is a true American patriot. He listened to the wise counsel of his party men who were worried about his mental acuity and fitness,” the statement read.
SECG noted that President Biden’s decision was motivated by his awareness of his potential defeat by Donald Trump.
“Biden knew he would be roundly defeated by Donald Trump if he had gone ahead to win the nomination of the Democrats and contest the presidential vote in November,” the statement said.
In contrast, SECG lamented that underperforming public office holders in Nigeria refuse to resign despite their poor performance and health issues.
“But here in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. Some of those elected into office fall sick and yet sit tight on office,” the statement said.
SECG criticized these officials for attacking those who call on them to resign instead of taking responsibility for their actions.
“They underperform and even when they are told to quit or resign, they refuse and rather resort to attacking those who call on them to tow the path of reason,” the statement said.
SECG urged elected officials in Nigeria with health challenges and proven record of under performance to emulate President Biden’s example and resign with honour.
“President Biden is a true Democrat, and we call on elected officials in Nigeria who share similar circumstances with Biden to emulate this great American statesman,” the statement concluded.
