NCC Orders Reactivation Of Disconnected Lines

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecom service providers to immediately reactivate all lines recently disconnected due to unverified National Identification Numbers (NINs).

Many telecom subscribers were unable to access their phone lines over the weekend due to the inability to verify their NINs with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs).

The NCC noted that the disconnection was in line with laws and policies of the NIN-SIM linkage, which began in December 2020.

The compulsory linkage of NIN with SIM was directed by the government to bar unregistered SIM cards and SIMs not linked to NIN.

The Commission has reviewed the deadline several times, with the latest deadline set for July 31, 2024.

Despite extensions, many phone lines remain unlinked with verified NINs, prompting the NCC’s directive to reactivate disconnected lines.

The objectives of the NIN-SIM linkage policy include enhancing national security and ensuring the national SIM ownership database is accurate.

The policy aids in verifying and protecting users’ identities while providing access to a robust digital economy.

The NCC prioritizes consumer interests and has directed operators to reactivate lines to allow consumers to properly link their NIN to their SIM.

Reactivated consumers are advised that this is for a limited period, and they must verify their NINs to maintain access to their lines.

The public is encouraged to verify their SIMs as soon as possible to avoid disconnection.

The NCC’s directive aims to mitigate the challenges caused by the blockages and ensure consumers have sufficient time to comply.

Telecom service providers are expected to comply with the NCC’s directive immediately.

The Commission will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary steps to ensure consumer interests are protected.

The NIN-SIM linkage policy is crucial for national security and the development of a robust digital economy.
