A devastating incident occurred on Saturday, August 10, 2024, in Umuayalu Egbu community, Owerri North Local Area of Imo State, resulting in the loss of four lives who perished in a soak away pit
According to an eyewitness, the soak-away pit had been evacuated by workers on Friday, but the owner complained about blockages affecting the water flow.
One of the deceased, identified as Eke, was said to have entered the pit to remove the blockage but failed to come out despite rescue efforts.
In a bid to assist Eke, three other men entered the pit, but they too met their demise.
The lifeless bodies were retrieved and taken to Holy Rosary Hospital, Emekuku, where the medical doctor confirmed them dead.
A source close to the incident expressed shock, suspecting that the men may have inhaled a harmful substance.
The cause of the blockage and the identity of the pit’s owner remain unknown.
The community is in mourning, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of four lives.
