Imo State is set to hold its local government election on Saturday, September 21, after a seven-year hiatus, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the autonomy of the third tier of government.
The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has assured its readiness for the polls.
Chairman of the Commission, Charles Ejiogu has promised a free and fair election.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) boasts candidates for all 27 local governments and 305 wards, solidifying its dominance.
The APC also refunded aspirants who failed the primary, showcasing its commitment to internal democracy
However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns about ISIEC’s transparency.
Lancelot Obiaku, PDP State Publicity Secretary, criticized ISIEC’s decision to charge Councillorship candidates N51,000 and Chairmanship candidates N200,000.
“The PDP calls on ISIEC to adhere to its guidelines and conduct a credible, free, and fair election,” Obiaku stated.
The party also expressed dismay over ISIEC’s failure to publish the list of voters in wards, with only few days left before the election.
In contrast, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the State expressed confidence in the electoral process and ISIEC’.
“Even if the election is held today, APGA is ready,” said John Iwuala, APGA State Chairman.
Iwuala downplayed controversy surrounding ISIEC’s direct dealings with candidates, stating, “Since our candidates choose to work with ISIEC directly, there’s nothing we can do. What’s key is that we’re ready for the Saturday election.”
However many Imolites are demanding for a credible poll.
Ernest Nze, a public policy analyst, commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for holding the election but emphasized the need for fairness.
“The local government election is commendable. It will bring governance closer to the people at the grassroots, especially during these hard times,” Nze said.
Desmond Anyanwu, of Centre for Good Governance and Democratic Studies, Owerri said the election’s outcome will significantly impact governance and development in the State.
He said all eyes are on ISIEC to deliver on its promise of a free and fair election.
“The people of Imo State eagerly await an election that truly represents their will.
“The election’s success will be a crucial step towards strengthening democracy in Imo State” he said
