The Imo State House of Assembly has taken a major step to maintain the state’s high education standards by adopting a motion to close unapproved private primary and secondary schools
The move aims to preserve Imo State’s status as Nigeria’s most educated state, with a remarkable 96.48% literacy rate.
Hon. Prince Obinna Egu, representing Ngor/Okpala State Constituency, moved the motion, highlighting the substandard conditions of these unapproved schools.
According to him, such schools lack proper certification, licensing, and non adherence to curriculum guidelines, poor facilities and unqualified teachers.
“These unapproved schools do not meet health and safety standards, and their admission procedure is misleading,” Hon. Egu emphasized.
The motion gained widespread support from lawmakers, including Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, and Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, among others.
Supporting lawmakers described some unapproved schools as family businesses with unqualified staff, inadequate curriculum, and poor facilities.
The lawmakers called for concerted efforts to address this anomaly and requested the Ministry of Education to publish a list of approved schools.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, put the motion to a vote, and it was unanimously adopted.
