The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, has strongly condemned the arson attack on the National Open University, Ezeoke Nsu, in Ehime Mbano, and the destruction of part of Senator Frank Ibezim’s residence.
Danjuma described the incident as a disturbing trend of violence that undermines community safety and security.
He assured that the police will take necessary measures to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The police commissioner, in a statement signed by the Command spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye,said he has deployed the Command’s Tactical Unit to identify and apprehend those responsible.
According to him, a comprehensive investigation will be conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Danjuma emphasized that no individual involved in the attack will escape legal consequences.
He urged the public to refrain from spreading fake news or making inciting statements that could destabilize the peace in the State.
Gunmen hsd set ablaze the National Open University of Nigeria Study Centre in Nsu, Ehime Mbano, and Ibezim’s country home on Monday night.
Ibezim, the immediate past senator for Imo North (Okigwe zone), had clarified that his visit to NOUN was misunderstood.
Ibezim stated, “The video of refugees attached to the TVC broadcast was not filmed in Imo State.
“The insinuation that there’s intent to settle IDPs, refugees, or migrant persons at NOUN Nsu Centre is entirely false.”
He explained that NOUN Nsu is a federal educational institution open to qualified applicants nationwide, with over 200 students enrolled since October 2023.
According to him, the visit aimed to assess facilities for specialized skills training.
Ibezim reiterated, “There are no plans to settle IDPs, Refugees, or Migrant persons at NOUN Centre Nsu. Any such claim is categorically false. The plan is for skills training for our vulnerable young people from the South East.”
The Imo state government had also refuted speculations about an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Ehime Mbano Local Government area.
However, the police said they are committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served.
Imo State has experienced previous instances of violence, including an inter-cult clash that resulted in eight deaths recently.
