Residents of Egbu community in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State have lamented the persistent epileptic power supply in the area, despite hosting a Transmission Station of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
The community, comprising indigenes and non-indigenes, expressed disappointment and frustration over the irregular electricity supply, which barely lasts three to four hours daily.
Vincent Uwakwe, a resident of Mpama village, told this newspaper “Since this year, the level of power supply to the community is unimpressive…
“I had believed that since the community is host to an EEDC Transmission Station, indigenes and non-indigenes should enjoy some benefits such as improved power supply. But this is not the case because we barely see electricity.”
Raymond Unanka, another indigene of the community, complained that the entire community gets less than four hours of electricity, a situation which has affected businesses.
“I’m surprised because we have the EEDC distribution station right here in our domain. And we have stayed in peace with them.
“There should be some benefits to the people who live in the area, especially since many residents pay their electricity bills.”
Kevin Eke, a football viewing center owner, recalled that the community enjoyed better power supply in the past .
“Since this year, supply has been so poor… I appeal to EEDC to improve power supply to Egbu community. It’s unacceptable that, as host community of a transmission station , we languish in darkness most days of the week.”
“We are not asking for too much. We just want regular power supply because most consumers in the community pay their bills despite the exorbitant monthly charges” he said
Other residents who spoke on condition of anonymity also demanded improved electricity supply, citing the presence of the EEDC Transmission Station as a reason for better service.
Nnamdi Ahamefule, a barbing salon owner at Afor Egbu, lamented the crippling effect of poor power supply on his business.
“I spend my entire profit on fueling my generator set. I appeal to the Improve power supply to this area” Ahamefule stated.
