The recent announcement of the Super Eagles squad for AFCON qualifier against Libya, has ignited a debate regarding the selection criteria employed by head coach, Austin Eguavoen.
Analysts are calling for transparency and clarity, particularly in light of the inclusion of players who are currently struggling to find their form.
Among those under scrutiny are Kelechi Iheanacho and Taiwo Awoniyi, both of whom have yet to score this season for their respective clubs.
“Inviting players who are out of form raises questions about the team’s strategy,” said Owerri based football analyst, Kevin Iwu.
“It’s crucial for the national team to prioritize players who are actively contributing in their clubs.”he said.
They argue that the decision to select these players may not serve the best interests of the Super Eagles.
They also believe that alternatives, such as Victor Olatunji from Spartak Prague and Akor Adams of Montpellier, would have been more suitable choices given their recent performances for their respective clubs.
Also, the selection of defender Benjamin Tanimu has sparked controversy.
Recently signed to Crawley Town in the English third division, Tanimu’s inclusion over the more experienced Kevin Akpoguma—who remains a regular at Hoffenheim—has left many puzzled.
Another football analyst, Benjamin Ahanonu said, “Tanimu’s move to a lower division raises concerns.
“Akpoguma’s experience could provide vital stability to the defense.”he said
He argued that the disparity between current form and selection has led to calls for a more strategic approach in players selection to the Super Eagles.
According to him, fans are eager to know how these decisions align with the team’s overall objectives.
“The Super Eagles need players who can bring confidence and skill to the pitch,” Ahanonu added.
