A Media Relations Consultant, Chief Dr. Fidel Onyeneke, has renewed his call for a specialized insurance scheme for media practitioners in Nigeria.
He emphasized that such a scheme should also provide security for the dependent relatives of journalists.
Chief Onyeneke made the appeal in Owerri on Thursday while reacting to the sudden demise of the Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State, Mr. Emma Odibo.
He stressed the need for adequate insurance coverage for journalists in both government and private sectors, considering the numerous hazards associated with their work.
Onyeneke lamented the neglect of journalists’ welfare by some employers, despite the critical roles they play in the socio-political and economic development of society.
Describing Mr. Odibo’s death as a significant setback to the media profession, Onyeneke expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a journalist who made substantial contributions to the profession.
He noted that the late Odibo’s efforts in advancing journalism, particularly in the Southeast, would be greatly missed.
The former Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Public Orientation highlighted Mr. Odibo’s pivotal role in the early development of private newspapers in the eastern region. “
He was among the first set of reporters who worked tirelessly to enhance private newspaper publishing, especially in Imo State,” Onyeneke said.
He also praised the deceased for his unwavering dedication to the journalism profession, recalling how Mr. Odibo served the NUJ in various capacities, using his vast experience to foster peace, unity, and progress within the union.
While condoling the immediate and extended family of the late journalist, Onyeneke expressed hope that Mr. Odibo’s positive legacies would endure and inspire future generations of media professionals.
