The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over threats to his life following his vocal criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Obi made the allegation in a post on his official X handle on Monday, accusing the government of repressing free speech and warning of a growing authoritarian regime in Nigeria.
His comments come in response to remarks made by the National Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, who had stated that Obi had “crossed the line so many times” and that whatever consequences followed were warranted.
In his post, Obi lamented the increasing suppression of freedom of expression in Nigeria and affirmed his commitment to speaking out despite the threats.
“Have I really crossed the line? I ask the question because my New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me,” Obi wrote.
He continued: “While I have received all sorts of messages, one Mr. Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of ‘crossing the line’ and has warned that I will face the consequences.”
Obi questioned the nature of his alleged transgressions, inviting anyone to point out where he had overstepped.
“If I have truly crossed the line, I invite anyone to point it out, as I remain committed to upholding decorum,” he said.
He also expressed deep concern about the nation’s political climate, asserting that Nigeria was increasingly shifting towards an authoritarian and repressive state.
“We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor concluded his post by calling for a freer society: “May God help us create a better and freer society for the sake of our children.”
