The political camp of former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, is in suspense as he has yet to announce the new political party through which he plans to pursue his governorship ambition in 2027.
Ihedioha resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last year, citing irreconcilable differences.
His departure was reportedly linked to a fallout with the now-ousted National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Alongside his exit, Ihedioha also withdrew his political structure, the Rebuild Imo Movement, from the PDP.
Speculations had earlier suggested that Ihedioha might join the Labour Party.However, ongoing internal issues within the party are believed to have deterred the move.
While Ihedioha remains undecided, his key allies, including his former Chief of Staff, Chris Okewulonu, and Hon. Chuma Nnaji, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defection has sparked mixed reactions, with some interpreting it as a sign that Ihedioha might follow suit, while others argue that the moves were independent of the former governor.
A source within the Rebuild Imo Movement who spoke to INNONEWS dismissed the possibility of Ihedioha aligning with the APC.
In an effort to rally his supporters and halt further defections, Ihedioha held a strategic meeting on Tuesday, January 7, 2024 with his followers.
Speaking to his coordinators, he hinted at plans to join a political party that aligns with the philosophy of good governance upheld by the Rebuild Imo Movement.
“Soon, we will be in a political party that does not have maggots,” Ihedioha reportedly said.
He also urged his local government and ward coordinators to welcome new members into the movement, which he described as “golden” and increasingly attracting interest, even from the diaspora.
Until discussions with potential partners are concluded, Ihedioha declared, “Rebuild Imo Movement remains our political party.”
The meeting boosted morale among some supporters, many of whom have been politically stranded since his exit from the PDP.
However, the prolonged uncertainty has raised concerns about the future of Ihedioha’s political aspirations and the strength of his camp as countdown to the 2027 Imo governorship election begins.
