Protesters loyal to Senator Sam Anyanwu, the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who was recently removed by the Court of Appeal, gathered at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to oppose the expected resumption of Sunday Ude-Okoye as the new national secretary.
The protest took place at the rear gate of the PDP’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, on Monday, where the protesters voiced their displeasure by chanting slogans like “No vacancy in the National Secretary’s office” and “Senator Sam Anyanwu remains the National Secretary.”
The protestors, firmly supporting Anyanwu’s continued leadership in the party, expressed their determination to prevent any changes in the national secretary position.
Their strong stance reflected growing tensions within the PDP as rival factions clashed over control of key party positions. As the protest unfolded, they made it clear that they would not accept the decision to replace Anyanwu with Ude-Okoye, as sanctioned by the Court of Appeal.
To ensure peace and avoid potential chaos, security was increased at the PDP’s headquarters, Wadara Plaza, Abuja. Additional police personnel were deployed to the premises, while a police lorry was stationed outside the main gate.
Alongside the party’s regular security team, the police carried out thorough checks, inspecting both workers and visitors before granting them access to the building.
Despite the growing tension, no national officer of the PDP had arrived at the secretariat at the time of filing the report.
The absence of leadership at the party headquarters further underscored the unrest and uncertainty surrounding the internal conflict over the national secretary’s position. The situation remained tense as party members awaited the next steps.
