Nigerian workers are preparing for a large-scale nationwide protest on February 4, 2025, in response to the recent 50 percent increase in telecommunications service tariffs. This move was announced by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday.
The protest follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval on January 20, 2025, allowing telecom companies to raise their service charges by 50 percent. The announcement has sparked widespread outrage, with the NLC leading the charge against the hike.
In a statement, the NLC emphasized that the protest is aimed at resisting the government’s decision, which they argue will only exacerbate the already dire economic conditions faced by Nigerian workers and citizens.
The NLC confirmed their plans to hold the protest as a significant move to challenge the hike.
NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed strong opposition, stating that the increase is a blatant disregard for the struggles of Nigerians, particularly as they face unprecedented economic hardship. The hike, according to the NLC, further burdens the working class and benefits only large corporations.
The protest follows earlier actions by Nigerians, including the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers, who have threatened legal action against both the government and telecom companies over the tariff increase.
The government has justified the rise in tariffs, citing a high inflation rate of 34.80 percent in December 2024, but the decision has faced criticism from various sectors who believe it will push more Nigerians into poverty.
