Former military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has openly acknowledged that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
This revelation was made in Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, unveiled during a book launch in Abuja on Thursday.
Former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the autobiography, cited Babangida’s admission that Abiola secured the majority of votes in the historic election.
Reflecting on the controversial annulment, Babangida described it as the most difficult decision of his life.
“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida wrote.
The retired general also expressed appreciation to former President Muhammadu Buhari for recognizing Abiola’s victory.
In 2018, Buhari conferred Abiola with Nigeria’s highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), a title reserved for presidents.
