APC, Not For Me, Says Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has categorically denied any affiliation with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and affirmed his unwavering stance on integrity and issue-based politics.

In a statement released on Friday, Obi dismissed recent social media reports linking him to an APC event. He described the allegations as baseless and reiterated his commitment to a politics free of toxicity, blackmail, and manipulation.

“For the avoidance of doubt, both now and in the future, I am not a member of the APC, nor am I an intending member,” Obi stated.

The former governor of Anambra emphasized that his political philosophy remains rooted in integrity, fairness, and competence. He urged political parties to prioritize aspirants’ competence, capacity, and compassion, which he considers essential for advancing Nigeria’s progress.

Obi also addressed speculations surrounding his former ally, Valentine Ozigbo, who recently defected to the APC and declared his intention to run for governor in Anambra State.

In February, Ozigbo had expressed optimism about Obi joining him in the ruling party.

Obi said, “As for Valentine Ozigbo, I maintain that he, like every other aspirant, should be evaluated based on key leadership qualities in his new political party. Elections and primaries should not be reduced to toxic narratives or personal attacks.”

Obi further emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in political processes, including party primaries, regardless of the method used. He insisted that all aspirants deserve equal opportunities to contest without undue bias or controversy.

“Political choices should be guided by credibility, vision, and the ability to deliver real change — not by dragging individuals into toxic discussions, blackmail, or needless controversy,” Obi added.
