In a keenly contested primary election held in Awka, the Anambra State capital, Dr. George Moghalu, former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), emerged victorious as the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate for the upcoming November 8 governorship election.
Moghalu overwhelmingly defeated his opponent, John Chuma Nwosu, by securing 573 delegate votes compared to Nwosu’s 19 votes.
The exercise, which took place under heavy security presence, was conducted smoothly and transparently, drawing attention from political observers across the state.
In his acceptance speech, Moghalu called for unity within the party, extending an olive branch to his opponent and urging him and his supporters to join forces for the bigger task ahead.

“We must work together to ensure Labour Party triumphs in the November election.”he said.
Moghalu expressed strong confidence in his ability to defeat the incumbent, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, declaring that his candidacy represents a genuine opportunity to reshape the trajectory of governance in Anambra State.
“I assure the delegates and the people of Anambra State that I will not betray the confidence bestowed on me,” he stated.
The Labour Party candidate criticized the current administration for failing to meet the expectations of the people, promising a government that would restore hope and trust.
“We are going into this election determined to change the narrative,” Moghalu asserted.
He acknowledged that while the current government may have made some strides, there are still glaring gaps in areas such as security and infrastructure.
“Our security and basic infrastructure have all failed and something has to be done. I must acknowledge that there are areas they have done very well, but there is need for improvement,” he remarked.
Addressing the delegates, Moghalu emphasized the challenge of unseating an incumbent but maintained that it is achievable with commitment and unity.
“Running an election against an incumbent is not a tea party but it is doable. For us to do it, we must put the first foot forward,” he said.
He further appealed to party members and Anambra citizens to evaluate his track record, assuring them of his capacity to lead.
“This is what I am pleading with you—to put your confidence in me and I will not betray it if you check my track records,” he said.
Moghalu painted a picture of a brighter future for the state, one anchored on purposeful leadership and citizen-focused governance.
“The most important and critical thing that has taken flight in the politics of Anambra is that the people have lost confidence in their government,” he noted.
“Our mission is to restore the confidence of our people in their government, and that can only be possible by offering them good governance,” he added, reinforcing his readiness for the task ahead.
Moghalu made a passionate plea for trust and support.
“I appeal to you to trust me, check my political trajectory and you will see that I have never started a project I did not complete,” he said.
“I represent the light that will bring glory for the name of God Almighty and for the benefit of Ndi Anambra,” Moghalu declared, as supporters cheered his emergence as the Labour Party’s flagbearer.
