The Imo State Police Command has dismissed claims circulating on social media about an alleged prison break at the Owerri Correctional Facility on April 10, 2025.
The reports indicated that Fulani herdsmen attacked the facility and freed inmates, but the police have labeled this information as baseless and false.
“There has been no attack, no prison break, and no security breach in Imo State. The Owerri Correctional Facility remains secure,” stated DSP Okoye Henry, the Police Public Relations Officer.
He emphasized that security personnel are working diligently with other agencies to maintain peace and order across the state.
The Command described the misinformation as a deliberate effort to incite panic, provoke ethnic tensions, and mislead the public.
“This fake report is an attempt to create unnecessary anxiety and discord among residents. We urge the public to disregard it entirely,” DSP Henry added.
In response to the incident, the police have launched an investigation to identify those behind the spread of the false report.
“We are determined to apprehend the mischief makers responsible for this and ensure they face the full weight of the law,” said DSP Henry.
The Command warned against the dangers of sharing unverified information, urging residents to rely only on credible sources for news.
“Spreading fake news is not just irresponsible—it is a criminal act. Legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of disseminating such content,” the statement read.
The Command reassured citizens of their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of everyone in the state
