Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu has passed away at the age of 74.
The football legend died on Saturday morning.
Details surrounding his death remain undisclosed at the time of this report.
The sad news was confirmed by Chukwu’s longtime friend and former teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami.
“I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, has passed on,” Odegbami revealed.
Odegbami also mentioned Emmanuel Okala as the bearer of the heartbreaking news.
“Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven and console his family,” he added.
Chukwu was a key figure in Nigerian football history.
He captained the national team to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980.
His leadership and skill on the field earned him national and international acclaim.
Beyond his playing days, Chukwu transitioned into coaching, guiding the Super Eagles in the early 2000s.
His contributions to Nigerian football remain monumental, both as a player and as a coach.
