Recently, the State print and social media space was awash with a statement credited to Imo State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the highly cerebral Chief Cyprian Okechukwu. C. Akaolisa, suggesting that Governor Hope Uzodimma’s successor in the forthcoming 2027 Imo off-season election will emerge from the governor’s inner political structure, known as CAMPHOPE. The statement as expected has sparked intense debate amongst various stakeholders. As a respected legal scholar and politician, and one who is not known for frivolous political showbiz, Akaolisa’s opinion carries significant weight. No doubt this statement has raised questions about the potential implications for Imo State’s politics.
Recall the Governor Uzodimma’s recent assertion in one of his meetings with few political leaders of Owerri zone, under the auspices of Imo Harmony Project (IHP) wherein the governor informed his guests that his successor will come from the All Progressives Congress (APC), seems to align with Akaolisa’s statement. This has led many to speculate about the Attorney General’s intentions and the potential implications for Imo State’s politics, knowing his strategic position in the political machinery of the governor.
While the statements suggest the political direction of the governor and his inner political foot soldiers. It doesn’t however reflect the historical reality of Imo politics and the political attitudes of Imo electorates. We have seen government come and go, Imo is not known for such naive political manipulation and gang up.
Historically, Imo State has demonstrated a strong republican attitude, with citizens resisting attempts by outgoing governors to impose their preferred successors. From Achike Udenwa to Okorocha, none could successfully impose their chosen candidates on the people. This tradition of independence and self-determination is the hallmark of Imo State’s politics, and citizens are likely to continue this trend in the search for Uzodimma’s successor.
In terms of visibility, viability, credibility and popularity, the Camphope as a political organization founded and funded by the governor or his friends is nowhere to be compared with the political sagacity, popular appeal and grassroots integration with such political groups like Redemption 98, New Face Organization and Rescue Mission associated with former governors. The truth is there is nothing about Camphope as a political structure that portray a structure deeply rooted amongst the people to sway the political direction of Imolites come 2027. If there is any political structure that is so disconnected from the people of the State, it is the Camphope Organization.
As we navigate towards 2027, the search for Uzodimma’s successor extends far beyond the Camphope political family or any single association. Imolites will scrutinize all corners of the Owerri zone, to find the right candidate for the job, considering various factors and individual credentials. The candidate’s ability to appeal to the diverse interests and needs of the state’s various communities will be a key consideration.
The search also transcends party affiliations, as no single party has dominated Imo State’s governorship elections. The political landscape is dynamic, with allegiances shifting between parties like APC and others. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have also played significant roles in the state’s politics, and their influence cannot be ignored.
Imolites will not be swayed by attempts to dictate their choice. The people will make their decision based on their assessment of the candidates’ qualifications, policy roadmap, and commitment to the state’s development. The candidate’s track record, integrity, and vision for the state’s future will also be crucial factors in the decision-making and leadership recruitment process. Also the candidate’s ability to connect with the people, understand their needs, and address their concerns will be another major key factor.
