Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim has defended his strategy to prioritize the Europa League over the Premier League. His approach has drawn sharp criticism from pundits, including former club captain Roy Keane.
Keane described United’s domestic form as a “disgrace” after their 16th Premier League loss this season. However, Amorim insists his focus on Europe is a calculated risk.
“We deserve the criticism.But my priority is what’s best for the club, not what’s best for me.” he said.
United’s Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21 offers a chance at silverware and Champions League qualification. Their convincing 7-1 aggregate victory over Athletic Bilbao secured their spot in the showdown, despite domestic struggles.
The Red Devils currently sit 15th in the Premier League. They face West Ham this weekend, a match that could see them slip closer to the relegation zone if results don’t go their way. Amorim acknowledges the challenges, saying, “We are Manchester United. We need to win games in the Premier League too.”
Amorim’s team selection for recent matches has been scrutinized. He made eight changes in their 4-3 loss to Brentford, leading to questions about player focus.
“Some mistakes against Brentford showed our players were thinking about the semi-final,” he admitted.
Asked about resting key players like Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire ahead of the final, Amorim stressed the need for balance.
“Sometimes it’s better to play than to stay out,” he explained. “But I will protect players at risk of injury.”
Despite the criticism, Amorim remains resolute. “The standards at this club are high, but we must be smart and take risks. Winning the Europa League is vital for our future,” he said.
