The serene community of Umuihugba-Umuodu in Owerri Municipal came alive on Friday, May 2, as friends, family, and well-wishers gathered to bid farewell to the late Pa Julius Anoruo, who was laid to rest in a ceremony marked by tributes and fanfare.
Pa Anoruo, aged 91, who retired with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), passed away a few months ago after a brief illness. Known for his strict discipline and commitment to community service, his death was a significant loss to his family and the community he served diligently.
The funeral rites began with a night vigil where hymns and prayers were offered in his honor.
On Friday, the final farewell commenced with a solemn church service at St. Mulumba Catholic Church, Owerri, attended by a large congregation. The service was a reflection of his devout faith and the legacy he left behind.
Following the church service, the funeral procession accompanied by youths made a symbolic stop at the palace of Eze Kevin Ihebom, the traditional ruler of the community.
The interment took place amidst an outpouring of emotions as family members, close associates, and friends paid their last respects to a man many described as a role model.
“He was a strict disciplinarian, but he did it with so much love and a sense of purpose,” said one of the attendees at the funeral.
Pa Anoruo is survived by his wife, Madam. Felicia Anoruo, five children, comprising sons, daughters, sons in law, daughters-in-law, and several grandchildren.
His family members were visibly moved by the overwhelming show of support and love from those who attended the funeral.
Speaking at the event, a close family friend highlighted Pa Anoruo’s dedication to his community, describing him as a man who lived a life of integrity and service.
“He was a beacon of hope and an example of selflessness. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire us all,” he remarked.
