Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has signed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2024, following its passage by the State House of Assembly.
This development was announced during a 3-day workshop on rights-based approaches to disability-inclusive development, governance, and public policy.
imo State joins over 20 states in Nigeria that have domesticated the Act, signaling a significant step toward fostering inclusivity and protecting the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The bill was championed by Hon. Engr. Innocent Ikpamezie, member representing Mbaitoli Constituency in the State Assembly.
The domestication of the Act came after relentless advocacy by prominent PWDs and organizations within the state.
Barr. Chidubem Uzodimma Ekwelem of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and Hon. Jude Okparaeke of the National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD) played key roles in the campaign.
Notable contributions also came from community leaders like Amb. Dr. Iyke Ibe (KSM), Hon. David Anyaele of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), Dr. Jude Ohanele, and others.
These advocates demonstrated determination and unity, ensuring that the rights and needs of PWDs were prioritized.
Governor Uzodimma’s assent has been widely applauded as a progressive step toward fostering equality and inclusion.
“This Act ensures that 1PWDs in Imo State can live with dignity and without fear of discrimination,” said Hon. Ikpamezie during the workshop.
With the law in place, stakeholders have expressed optimism about its implementation, emphasizing the need for continuous advocacy to ensure compliance and accountability at all levels of governance.
