Owerri football fans have vowed to resist any attempt by Heartland FC to hijack Kun Khalifat FC’s hard-earned promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) ahead of the 2025/2026 season.

Kun Khalifat FC, managed by former Super Eagles defender, Mobi Oparaku, recently secured promotion to the nation’s elite league after an impressive campaign.

This achievement has raised hopes for the return of top-flight football to Owerri following Heartland FC’s relegation last season.

However, controversy is brewing amid speculations that Heartland FC might attempt to leverage its history and influence to reclaim a spot in the NPFL by acquiring Kun Khalifat FC’s ticket.

In a stern warning, some aggrieved supporters who spoke to this newspaper urged Kun Khalifat FC to resist any overtures from Heartland FC, describing such a move as an insult to fans and a betrayal of sporting merit.

“Heartland FC should swallow the humble pill and play in the lower division where they rightly belong,”

“They cannot reap where they didn’t sow. Kun Khalifat FC worked for this ticket and must not trade it away, no matter how tempting the offer.” said a passionate supporter, Ebere Uche who wrote on Facebook.

The fans further threatened to stage a massive protest if Kun Khalifat FC cedes its NPFL slot to Heartland FC. “Enough is enough,” another fan fumed.

“Owerri deserves to see NPFL action again, but not at the expense of justice and fair competition.” he said.

The warning comes amid growing excitement in Owerri, where die hard football gains are eager to witness top-flight football after Heartland FC’s shocking relegation.

Kun Khalifat FC’s rise has sparked fresh enthusiasm, with many hailing Mobi Oparaku’s leadership for the club’s success.
