The Labour Party (LP) has thrown a political bombshell ahead of the 2027 elections, declaring its presidential ticket open to all aspirants and taking a swipe at Peter Obi’s involvement in the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Abayomi Arabambi, said the party will not favour any candidate, including Obi, who was its flag bearer in the 2023 general elections.
“There shall be primary elections in the Labour Party, and no aspirant will be favored this time around,” Arabambi declared.
He described Obi’s emergence as the LP candidate in 2023 as “a blunder with lasting consequences” and a betrayal of Nigerians’ trust, stressing that the party must correct its “mistake” before the next general elections.
Arabambi didn’t hold back in his criticism of the ADC coalition, dismissing its actors as “Yahoo Yahoo politicians” who, according to him, brought untold hardship on Nigerians between 2015 and 2023.
“Instead of a leader with debt and discipline and demonstrable progress for national renewal, Nigeria got a populist whose greatest skill is telling people what they want to hear, The 2027 election must not repeat this error even as Peter Obi has ported from Labour Party to ADC.”Arabambi said
The LP spokesman continued: “We wish Obi well in his yahoo yahoo coalition, but to let him know that the Labour Party presidential ticket is now open to all Nigerians. Nigerians are in fact wishing him well in that ungodly coalition because these are the same people that brought catastrophe on Nigerians between 2015 and 2023. Such a coalition must be rejected.”
Obi, who is still technically a member of the LP, recently joined forces with other opposition heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, under the ADC umbrella. He has also declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
