The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to mourn and honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 82, will be laid to rest on Tuesday in line with Islamic rites. His passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across Nigeria and beyond.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the public holiday in a statement issued on Monday, describing Buhari’s death as a national tragedy that calls for solemn reflection.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman whose legacy of service and dedication to Nigeria will remain evergreen. This holiday is to give Nigerians the opportunity to honour his memory,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
He urged Nigerians to use the day to pray for the repose of Buhari’s soul and for peace and unity in the country, which the late president devoted his life to pursuing.
Buhari, a former military Head of State and two-term democratic president, will be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, with full military honours.
