Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has insisted the Premier League properly handled the rape allegations against former midfielder Thomas Partey, despite mounting public criticism.
Partey is facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, brought against him just days after his contract with Arsenal expired. The charges, which have shaken the football world, stem from complaints reportedly made almost a year before his initial arrest in 2022.
Speaking at a press conference in Singapore, Arteta said Arsenal had “100 per cent” followed the “right processes” in addressing the situation. His remarks appear aimed at quelling backlash against the club and league authorities for their response.
The Telegraph revealed that Arsenal, the FA, and the Premier League were all aware of concerns about Partey as far back as September 2021. However, no investigation was launched at the time because the case fell outside the FA’s safeguarding remit, which applies only to adults and minors “at risk” in football.
This revelation has sparked outrage among fans and advocacy groups, who accuse football authorities of failing to act promptly and transparently. Critics argue that the lack of early intervention allowed Partey to continue playing while serious allegations loomed.
