The Interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has explained why former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, are yet to officially join the opposition party.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja over the weekend, Abdullahi said both Obi and El-Rufai were granted time to complete certain electoral processes within their former political parties before making the switch to ADC.
He reassured supporters and the general public that the duo remained committed to the ADC coalition and would formally move to the party once these processes are concluded.
“They were given the opportunity to finalise pending elections, including by-elections and the selection of governorship candidates within their legacy parties,” Abdullahi stated.
Addressing concerns over the ADC’s internal democracy, the interim spokesman maintained there was no hidden agenda or anointed candidate, stressing that every aspirant would enjoy a level playing field in the race for the party’s ticket.
Abdullahi also dismissed claims of legal troubles within the party, asserting, “We are confident in the legality of every step we have taken. We made sure we closed all loopholes the ruling party might try to use against us.”
