Medical and psychological experts have raised fresh concerns over the increasing cases of men slumping and dying during sexual activity—often in hotels and frequently with women who are not their wives.
The trend has become disturbingly common, with many victims being married men. The latest case involves a lecturer a Kogi State University don, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle,who reportedly died in a hotel after checking in with a woman identified as Miss Helen Raymond.
According to Clinical Psychologist and Mental Health Therapist, Mcfredericks Akor Edache, many men resort to sex enhancement pills in a bid to impress their partners, a habit he warns could have deadly consequences.
“It suffices to note here categorically that the first round of any sexual activity is the most pleasurable; the second round and other rounds are often characterized by fake and pseudo fantasy and orgasm, usually by the male to impress the female to prove sexual agility,” he said.
Edache further explained that sexual enhancement substances distort the natural sexual response cycle, increasing blood flow to erogenous zones but reducing it to other vital organs.
“This blood flow to these extremities may reduce blood flow to other vital organs necessary for survival… the absence of adequate blood flow could affect respiration, and death may occur,” he warned.
The therapist noted that while the male climax usually comes quicker than the female’s, men should resist the urge to “prove strength.”
“Men shouldn’t go into the women soon after seeing the irresistible sight; rather, take time to do foreplay so as to begin the process of the organism for her,” he advised.
Clinton Uche, a sex therapist based in Owerri State, added that sex—though natural—is now turning deadly due to fantasy-driven pressure and poor health screening.
“This incident of ‘from pleasure to grave’ has become a norm in Nigeria… Some men, out of excitement, exert too much force during sexual exercise and it leads to cardiac arrest or sudden death.”
He emphasized that many men enter sexual encounters with fantasies and high expectations, especially when engaging in extramarital affairs with strangers. “Many of them have no idea who they’re sleeping with. What if they’re diabolical? What if they’re spirits?” he asked.
Public affairs analyst and chemist Divine Mike Akor also raised moral concerns. He said the moral decay surrounding infidelity, and the use of dangerous enhancement drugs, is a core reason for these tragic outcomes.
“They take these substances to impress these ladies in bed, but not their wives… This is one of the reasons the incident hardly happens during the same act with their wives,” he observed.
Akor warned men to adopt contentment and self-control. “The use of sexual enhancement drugs or substances should be avoided or minimized due to their lethal effects. Contentment in marriage is the best sexual insurance,” he concluded.
As the death toll climbs, experts are unanimous: lust, drugs, and ego are proving a fatal mix—and if unchecked, more men may continue to die in the pursuit of fleeting pleasure.
