The Premier League has announced a raft of new rules for the 2025/26 season aimed at improving communication, speeding up play, and offering fans unprecedented access to the game. The changes will take effect from the opening weekend in August.
One of the biggest updates will see referees announce and explain VAR decisions directly to fans inside stadiums, a move designed to enhance transparency and reduce confusion over contentious calls. In addition, only team captains will be permitted to approach referees to contest decisions, a rule intended to curb crowding and dissent.
On-field regulations have also been tightened, with goalkeepers now required to release the ball within eight seconds or concede a corner kick. For penalty kicks, any double-touch by the taker will result in a retake rather than a turnover of possession.
The league is also introducing new media access initiatives. Winning managers will be allowed to give halftime interviews, substituted players can be interviewed during matches, and dressing room cameras will capture behind-the-scenes moments for broadcast.
Officials believe the changes will make the league more fan-friendly, transparent, and engaging, both inside stadiums and for global audiences watching from home.
