*Physical Exercise Kicks Off Nationwide
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an overwhelming response to its ongoing voter registration exercise, with a staggering 1,379,342 Nigerians pre-registering online in just one week.
In a statement by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the Commission said online pre-registration began on Monday, August 18, 2025 and by Sunday, August 24, 2025, millions of Nigerians had already taken advantage of the platform.
INEC described the figures as a strong signal of citizens’ readiness to participate in future elections.
Breaking down the numbers, INEC revealed that 661,846 (47.96%) of the new registrants are male, while 717,856 (52.04%) are female Young Nigerians between 18 and 34 years old make up the bulk of registrants with 860,286 (62.37%) while students account for 374,534 (27.15%)
Persons with disabilities also featured in the data, recording 27,089 (1.96%) registrations.
INEC confirmed that the physical phase of the exercise commenced today across 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide, giving citizens the opportunity to either complete their online registration or register afresh in person.
The Commission, however, issued a stern reminder that the exercise is only for eligible Nigerians who are at least 18 years old and have not registered before.
It warned that double or multiple registration remains illegal, although provisions exist for inter- and intra-state voter transfers as well as replacement of lost or damaged PVCs.
The voter registration drive will run for one year, ending on August 30, 2026.
INEC urged Nigerians not to delay until the last minute, warning that past experiences show centres are often overwhelmed by last-hour rush and avoidable calls for deadline extension.
