The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has declared that it may not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, leaving open the option of striking alliances with “progressives who share its ideology.”
National Chairman of the party, Sly Ezeokenwa, made this known at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to him, the final decision would be taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) at the appropriate time, but he maintained that APGA was not under any obligation to produce a presidential flagbearer.
“APGA is the foremost progressive party in Nigeria. When the time comes, our NEC will decide whether to present a candidate for president in 2027 or to align with other progressive forces who share our ideals,” he said.
Mr. Ezeokenwa defended APGA’s open support for President Bola Tinubu, insisting it was in line with the party’s history of forming strategic alliances with the ruling party at the centre.
He recalled that APGA had thrown its weight behind former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2011 and 2015 elections, despite having the option of running on its own.
“We don’t owe any apology for supporting Mr. President’s economic reforms. Our goal has always been to advance progressive governance and ensure policies that leave no one behind,” the APGA chairman declared.
The party boss stressed that APGA’s immediate priority was to consolidate power in its stronghold of Anambra State, where it has governed for nearly 20 years.
He expressed confidence that Governor Charles Soludo would secure a second term in 2026, boasting that APGA’s dominance in Anambra was unshaken.
