Yakubu: Super Eagles Lack Creativity, Rely Too Much On Defensive Midfielders

Former Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, has taken aim at the Nigerian national team’s midfield setup, insisting the squad lacks creativity and balance.

Speaking on OgaNlaMedia, the ex-Everton forward said the Eagles are overloaded with defensive midfielders, a situation he believes limits attacking opportunities for strikers.

“When we look at the team, we have too many defensive midfielders. We don’t have a creative midfielder, If I play in this team, I’ll struggle to score goals. I’m telling you because when you look at Osimhen when he plays, he’s fighting because he knows already.”Yakubu said

The former international stressed that Nigeria’s midfielders are unable to provide the kind of service required for efficient attacking play.

“We don’t have a midfielder who can pass the ball. We always pass the ball sideways,” he said.

Yakubu also criticised the team’s inability to maintain fluid play.

“We cannot string six passes or seven passes. When we pass the ball a bit, then we kick it long. We cannot build a team like this.” he noted.
