The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called on the Ijaw nation to remain calm, united, and strategic in the face of recent political defections across Nigeria, especially in Bayelsa State.
In a statement signed by its president, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the INC said it is closely observing the wave of defections and political realignments, warning that while the organization remains non-partisan, the ongoing shifts carry far-reaching implications for the unity and long-term interests of the Ijaw people.
“We are deeply concerned about the implications of these rapid political realignments on the unity, stability, and strategic interests of the Ijaw nation,”
“While our people have the right to make political choices, we must not allow transient expediency to fracture our collective resolve.” Okaba stated.
According to the INC, some Ijaw leaders fear that the mass movement into the ruling party could erode the region’s political independence and reduce its bargaining power within the federation.
“This trend carries inherent dangers,” the statement warned, “including the risk of internal division, ideological confusion, and the possibility of becoming politically captive to a single entity.”
However, Okaba acknowledged that others see the defections as a tactical move that could reposition the Ijaw within the mainstream of federal politics.
“To many of our leaders, this is a strategic calculation.
“It could move the Ijaw from the political periphery into the centre of federal power and open access to infrastructure, economic projects, and national influence.” he said.
He noted that proximity to federal power could bring tangible development to Ijaw land, from roads and seaports to energy projects.
“Having a seat at the table of national decision-making gives us a chance to influence policies on oil derivation, environmental justice, and security in the creeks,” Okaba explained.
But the INC president cautioned that the benefits of realignment will only be realized if Ijaw leaders remain united and purposeful.
“This is not a time for division or hostility,” he said. “Our peace and stability are non-negotiable. We must think strategically, not emotionally.” he added.
Okaba reminded Ijaw politicians that their “primary allegiance is to the Ijaw people, not to any political platform.”
He warned against sacrificing collective progress for personal ambition, adding: “Political parties are vehicles for advancement, but the destination must always remain the empowerment and protection of the Ijaw nation.”
The INC emphasized that what matters most is not the defections themselves but how Ijaw leaders manage the consequences.
“This moment is a test of political skill,” the group noted. “If handled wisely, it could bring inclusion and influence. If mismanaged, it could cost us our identity and voice in the Nigerian federation.”
“The Ijaw nation is greater than any political party or individual,” Okaba declared.
“Our struggle for equity and inclusion is a marathon, not a sprint. Let us navigate this season with patience, unity, and courage. The Ijaw spirit is unbreakable.” he concluded.
