Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has described Nigeria as “a now disgraced country,” condemning the non-payment of allowances owed to the Super Eagles despite their patriotic service to the nation.
In a post shared on his verified X handle, Obi expressed disappointment that players who sacrifice their time and energy to represent Nigeria are being treated unfairly, saying the situation paints a shameful picture of national priorities.
“It is truly unfortunate that our Super Eagles, who consistently give their best in representing our dear nation, are being owed their allowances,” Obi stated. “We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag, bring us pride, and serve with dedication. That is what is found in a now disgraced country.”
The former Anambra governor said the government’s failure to honour its obligations to national players reflects a deeper moral decay in governance and a lack of respect for public service. He warned that such negligence sends a dangerous message to the younger generation about the futility of hard work and patriotism.
“When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to our youth — that hard work and service are not rewarded,” Obi said, urging authorities to prioritize the welfare of the nation’s representatives.
He maintained that those who bring honour to Nigeria through sports deserve to be paid promptly and treated with respect, stressing that responsible leadership must demonstrate fairness and accountability.
