Former Super Eagles striker, Victor Anichebe has taken a swipe at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Anichebe voiced his criticism on social media after the Super Eagles’ dramatic defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final of the African playoffs.
Eric Chelle’s Leopards overcame the Super Eagles 4-3 on penalties in Rabat on Sunday night, ending Nigeria’s hopes of returning to football’s biggest stage.
The loss marks the second consecutive World Cup that the Super Eagles have failed to qualify for, raising fresh questions over the administration and long-term planning of the NFF.
“Real change demands selflessness, long-term thinking, and building foundations that won’t produce instant rewards,” Anichebe wrote on his Instagram page. “If we want serious outcomes, we must start having serious conversations that lead to serious decisions.”
The former forward’s remarks come amid growing frustration among fans and pundits over Nigeria’s football management, player development, and strategic planning. Many have pointed to a lack of cohesive leadership and vision as key factors behind the national team’s repeated disappointments.
With the World Cup now out of reach, the Super Eagles will turn their focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to kick off in Morocco next month, as they aim to restore pride and credibility on the continental stage.
