A Board of Trustees member of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comr. Okereke Godson Bishop, has hailed the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Nnenna Oti, for her keynote contribution at the International Students Day commemoration held in Abuja.
Okereke, who also serves as Special Adviser on Student Affairs to the FUTO Vice Chancellor, praised the substance of the address, which was delivered on her behalf by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. C.M. Agu.
He said the message resonated strongly with students, particularly its emphasis on discipline, academic excellence, research, innovation, creativity, patriotism and nation-building. According to him, Prof. Oti’s commitment to hard work, excellence and positive student conduct has continued to define her leadership style.
Okereke noted that the Vice Chancellor, supported by the institution’s management and staff, has repositioned FUTO and strengthened the welfare and academic environment for students.
He quoted Prof. Oti as affirming that Nigerian students remain central to the country’s development trajectory — not only as learners, but as innovators, peace-builders and custodians of the nation’s aspirations.
He further highlighted her remarks that true academic excellence goes beyond grades, reflecting character, competence and meaningful societal contribution. She also stressed that the future growth of the country depends on investments in youth skills, creativity and innovation, backed by education systems that respond to modern demands.
Okereke added that the VC underscored ongoing national efforts to expand student opportunities through innovation hubs, digital literacy programmes and entrepreneurship initiatives that connect classroom learning to real-world impact.
He commended students for their resilience and urged them to remain committed to their studies in order to secure a brighter future.
The ceremony also featured recognition for a distinguished FUTO student who emerged as the overall best student in Nigeria with a CGPA of 4.96.
