The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has said the Imo State Government should be held responsible for any power disruption in the state going forward, accusing officials of making unfounded and politically motivated allegations against the utility firm.
In a statement signed by Emeka Ezeh, its Group Head of Corporate Communications, the company said the government had “raised false alarms and made unverified, baseless accusations,” insisting that EEDC remains committed to delivering improved and sustainable power supply to its customers across Imo State.
EEDC said it was unfortunate that the state government had chosen propaganda as its preferred tool, arguing that such tactics were being used to divert attention and mask longstanding hostility toward the company and its operations.
The power distributor was reacting to a public announcement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, alleging that EEDC was plotting a massive electricity outage to sabotage the state’s power project.
Describing the allegation as “baseless, unfounded, and completely devoid of truth,” EEDC urged residents and electricity consumers to disregard the claim in its entirety, stressing that it had no plans to carry out any “major outage” in Imo State.
EEDC said the government’s posture was undermining efforts to strengthen electricity supply, urging officials to instead provide an enabling environment for licensed operators to function effectively rather than frustrating their operations “through the use of state machinery.”
The company cited a recent incident on November 15, 2025, in which armed policemen, allegedly acting on the instruction of the state government, stormed the Egbu transmission station of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and forced the duty operator, at gunpoint, to shut down all feeders — an action that plunged customers into total darkness.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” EEDC stated, “there is no plan whatsoever to carry out any major outage in Imo State.” The company added that it is continually investing in improved supply reliability and service quality across the state.
EEDC reiterated its commitment to its mandate and pledged to keep working diligently to provide stable and efficient electricity distribution to homes and businesses across Imo State.
