A fresh wave of grassroots development swept through Imo State on Monday as the state government released project documents and mobilization papers for the newly approved ward constituency projects—an initiative allegedly backed by a hefty N3.6 billion allocation.
Under the programme, each of the 306 councillors in the state will receive N10 million to execute priority projects in their respective wards, marking one of the largest direct community-level interventions under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration.
Councillors and their nominated contractors converged on Owerri to collect the approved documents, signaling the official commencement of the ward-driven projects.
According to reports, the Commissioner for Rural Development and Economic Empowerment, Hon. Chief Ifeanyi D. Oruh, who represented the governor, announced that participating commercial banks have been fully authorized to begin releasing funds immediately.
Oruh emphasized the premium Governor Uzodimma places on the programme, urging councillors to strictly supervise the contractors and ensure that quality, speed, and transparency define every project.
“These projects are dear to His Excellency. Go back to your wards, fast-track the execution, and do not fail yourselves or the people who elected you,” the commissioner reportedly charged.
He explained that the scheme is designed to deepen government presence in rural communities and ensure that development is not only felt at the urban level but across every ward in the state.
The commissioner also appealed for smooth synergy between councillors, contractors, and community stakeholders in order to avoid delays and guarantee maximum impact.
The ward constituency projects span a wide scope of community needs, including water supply schemes, rural road rehabilitation, classroom blocks, primary healthcare centers, and electrification projects—each tailored to local priorities.
