Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has been conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a recognition he described as a “defining and emotional moment” for him and his family.
Troost-Ekong received his official national honour certificate on Monday, a day after the announcement of the award, adding a personal touch to the prestigious accolade.
“I am truly honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for bestowing on me the MFR national honour,” Troost-Ekong said. “Receiving the official certificate today makes it even more special. It is a very proud moment for me and my family.”
Reflecting on his years with the national team, the AFCON silver-medalist emphasized the profound impact Nigeria has had on his life and career. He noted that representing the country shaped both his identity and purpose.
“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the platform to live out my dream through football. Wearing the green and white has always meant responsibility, privilege, and a lifelong promise to give everything for the badge and for our people,” he said.
Troost-Ekong also turned his attention to the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, sending a message of encouragement to the current Super Eagles squad as they begin their campaign.
“As our Super Eagles kick off their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As I promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, I believe in our nation, and I believe in what we can achieve together,” he added.
