United States President Donald Trump says he has ordered a military strike against fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) operating in north-west Nigeria.
Trump disclosed this in a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Thursday night, describing the operation as a decisive action authorised by him in his capacity as commander-in-chief.
According to the US president, the strike targeted ISIS elements he accused of carrying out sustained attacks and killings in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly against Christian communities.
He said the operation involved what he described as “powerful” and “precise” strikes, carried out by the US military, adding that the action followed earlier warnings issued to the group.
Trump further claimed that the operation demonstrated Washington’s resolve to prevent what he called “radical Islamic terrorism” from gaining ground under his leadership.
